City of Canning AI for Leaders

Brief

The City of Canning engaged AI Advancements to deliver an AI for Leaders workshop for its senior team. The focus was on what AI means specifically for local government – how it can support better community services, smarter use of data, and more efficient internal operations. Through a mix of education and collaborative exercises, leaders explored real-world examples of Large Language Models, AI agents, and computer vision, and translated those concepts into opportunities for the City of Canning.

Problem

The City of Canning, like many councils, could see that AI was rapidly shifting expectations around service delivery and internal efficiency. What was missing was:

• A shared, practical understanding of modern AI capabilities
• Clarity on how AI fits within a public-sector environment with governance, risk, and community trust requirements
• A structured way to identify where AI could improve operations, not just add more technology Leaders wanted to move beyond buzzwords and build confidence in making informed decisions about AI – where to start, what to prioritise, and how to ensure responsible use.

Solution

We designed and delivered an in-person AI for Leaders workshop tailored to the City of Canning’s priorities. The session covered:

• AI in a local government context – practical examples across customer service, assets, compliance, and internal support
• Modern AI capabilities – Large Language Models, Generative AI, AI agents, and computer vision, explained in clear, non-technical language
• Risk, ethics, and governance – how to think about data, privacy, accountability, and vendor engagement
• Hands-on use case mapping – guided activities to identify and shape AI opportunities across teams

A key part of the session was structured ideation. Together, we developed around 15 concrete use cases, including at a high level:

• AI agents and phone call assistants
• Report automation
• Chatbots
• Computer vision ideas
• Avatars

Result

By the end of the workshop, the City of Canning leadership team had:

• A shared, realistic understanding of AI tailored to the responsibilities and constraints of local government
• A clear set of ~15 prioritised AI use cases linked to real processes and challenges inside the organisation
• Greater confidence to progress AI discussions with internal teams and external vendors
• A practical starting point for an AI roadmap, with clarity on which ideas were suitable for quick experimentation versus longer-term strategic projects Rather than a theoretical overview, the session gave leaders tangible next steps and a common language to guide AI adoption in a way that supports their community and staff.
